A Cloud of Trash (குப்பைகளால் ஆன ஒரு மேகம்)

Charu was a smart and bright girl. She always was kind to all but, she was the unhappiest girl among her friends. She was certainly the unhappiest girl in her entire class. She was perhaps the unhappiest girl in the world, or at least that’s what she felt.
What about her friends?

சாரு ஒரு புத்திசாலியான, சுறுசுறுப்பான பெண். அவள் எப்போதும் எல்லோரிடமும் கனிவாக இருப்பாள். ஆனால், அவளது நண்பர்களின் மத்தியில் அவள் ஒரு மகிழ்ச்சியற்ற பெண்ணாக இருந்தாள். அவளது வகுப்பு முழுவதிலும், அவள் நிச்சயமாக ஒரு மகிழ்ச்சியற்ற பெண்ணாக இருந்தாள். ஒரு வேளை, இந்த உலகத்திலேயே அவள் ஒரு சந்தோஷமற்ற பெண்ணாக இருக்கலாம். குறைந்தபட்சம் அவள் அப்படித்தான் தன்னை நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தாள்.

Charu had no friends any more. No one wanted to play with Charu, because she had a cloud hanging over her head.

சாருவுக்கு நண்பர்கள் யாரும் இல்லை. அவளுடன் யாரும் விளையாட விரும்பவில்லை ஏனெனில், தலைக்கு மேலே தொங்கிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரு மேகத்தை அவள் பெற்றிருந்தாள்.

The cloud had oranae peels and biscuit packets, broken toys and pencil shavings, twisted plastic bottles and colourful plastic bags. All surrounded by a swarm of buzzing flies.

அந்த மேகத்தில், ஆரஞ்சு தோல்கள், பிஸ்கட் பாக்கெட்டுகள், உடைந்த பொம்மைகள், பென்சிலை சீவியதால் வந்த குப்பைகள், வீணான – முறுக்கப்பட்ட பிளாஸ்டிக் பாட்டில்கள், மற்றும் வண்ணமயமான பிளாஸ்டிக் பைகள் ஆகியவை இருந்தன. பெருந்திரளான ஈக்கள் இக்குப்பையைச் சூழ்ந்திருந்தன.

Nobody wanted to play with a girl who had a cloud of trash hanging over her. What if a rotten banana peel fell on your head? YUCK!

குப்பைகளால் ஆன ஒரு மேகம் தன் தலைக்கு மேலே தொங்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது என்று நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரு பெண்ணிடம் யாருமே விளையாட விரும்பவில்லை. அழுகிய வாழைப்பழத் தோல் உங்கள் தலை மீது விழுந்தால்
எப்படி இருக்கும்? அருவருப்பு!

Charu couldn’t even play hide-and-seek any more. The cloud would always give her away. “Let’s walk to school together,” she said to Sona. Sona ran off in the opposite direction.

இனி சாரு கண்ணாமூச்சு விளையாட்டைக்கூட விளையாட முடியாது. அந்த மேகம் எப்போதும் அவளை (பிறரிடமிருந்து) தூர தள்ளியே வைத்திருக்கும். “நாம் பள்ளிக்கு ஒன்றாக சேர்ந்து நடந்துபோகலாம்,” என்று அவள் சோனாவிடம் கூறினாள். சோனா, எதிர் திசையில் ஓடியே போய்விட்டாள்.

She asked, “May I borrow your pencil?”

“உன் பென்சிலை இரவல் தருகிறாயா?,” என்று அவள் கேட்டாள்.

Jancy made a face and changed her seat to go sit with Asha.

ஜான்ஸி முகத்தை சுளித்தபடி, ஆஷாவின் அருகில் போய் உட்கார்ந்து கொண்டாள்.

Charu even had to eat her lunch alone.

சாரு தன் மதிய உணவைக்கூட தனியாகவே சாப்பிட வேண்டிருந்தது.

Charu knew that she should have listened to her Amma. Amma always told her not to litter.

அம்மா சொல்வதைக் கேட்டு அதன்படி நடந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும் என சாரு அறிந்திருந்தாள். குப்பைப் போடாதே என அம்மா எப்போதுமே சொன்னாள்.

“Don’t throw the banana peel on the road!”

“வாழைப்பழத் தோலை சாலையில் எறியாதே.”

“Throw the empty biscuit packet in the dustbin.”

“காலியான பிஸ்கட் பாக்கெட்டை குப்பைத் தொட்டியில் போடு”.

But, Charu never listened. She only laughed and kept littering. She did not care about her surroundings.

ஆனால், சாரு ஒருபோதும் அம்மாவின் பேச்சை கேட்டு நடப்பதில்லை. அவள் சிரித்தபடியே குப்பையை போட்டுவிடுவாள். சுற்றுப்புற தூய்மை பற்றி அவள் அக்கறை படவில்லை.

Then one day, Amma became very angry and said, “Soon, all this trash will start following you!”

பிறகு ஒரு நாள், அம்மா மிகவும் கோபத்துடன் அவளிடம் சொன்னாள்:- “விரைவில், இந்த குப்பையெல்லாம் உன்னை பின் தொடர்ந்து வரப்போகிறது.”

Charu just laughed.

சாரு வெறுமனே சிரித்தாள்.

The next morning, Charu woke up to a foul smell and the sound of buzzing flies. A cloud of trash was hanging over her head. Amma’s words had come true! .

அடுத்த நாள் காலை ஒரு துர்நாற்றம் மற்றும் ஈக்களின் பறக்கும் சத்தம் ஆகியவற்றால் சாரு விழித்தெழுந்தாள். அம்மாவின் வாக்கு உண்மையாகி விட்டது!

Charu tried to run away, but the trash cloud followed her everywhere.

சாரு ஓடிவிட முயற்சித்தாள். ஆனால், அந்த குப்பை மேகம் அவளை எல்லா இடத்திலும் பின் தொடர்ந்தது.

She tried to sweep the cloud down with a broom, only to find the cloud over her head.

அவள் ஒரு துடைப்பதால் அந்த மேகத்தை, பெருக்கித் தள்ள முயற்சித்தபோது, அது அவளது தலைக்கு மேலோக வந்துவிட்டது.

Charu tried EVERYTHING.

சாரு எல்லாவற்றையும் முயற்சி செய்து பார்த்துவிட்டாள்.

She screamed and asked the cloud to leave her alone. She even tried to throw it into the dustbin, but it just wouldn’t go. So, Charu became very unhappy. Then something happened! Charu saw Bala throwing a banana peel on the road near the park.

தன்னை தனியே விட்டுவிடும்படி அந்த மேகத்திடம் அலறியபடி கேட்டாள். அதை குப்பைத் தொட்டியில் வீசி எறிய முயற்சித்தாள், ஆனால் அது போகவே இல்லை. ஆகவே, சாரு மகிழ்ச்சியற்றவளாக |மாறிவிட்டாள்.

பிறகு ஏதோ ஒரு விஷயம் நடந்தது. பூங்காவின் அருகிலுள்ள ஒரு சாலையில் பாலா ஒரு வாழைப்பழத் தோலை எறிவதை சாரு பார்த்தாள்.

Charu was annoyed.
சாரு எரிச்சலடைந்தாள்.

Could he not see the cloud over her head?

She yelled, “Don’t throw the peel on the road. Someone will slip!”

Bala, scared of the trash cloud, threw the peel in the dustbin.

பாலா அந்த குப்பை மேகத்தைப்பார்த்து பயந்து போய், அந்தத் தோலை எடுத்து குப்பைத் தொட்டியில் போட்டான்.

The next day, the trash cloud had become smaller!

அடுத்த நாள், அந்த குப்பை மேகம் சிறிதாகிவிட்டது!

“How did that happen?” Charu wondered.

“அது எப்படி நடந்தது?” சாரு வியந்தாள்.

Then, Charu saw Amutha Aunty throwing away plastic bags near the hospital.

பிறகு, மருத்துவமனைக்கு அருகில், அமுதா ஆன்ட்டி பிளாஸ்டிக் பைகளை வீசி எறிவதை சாரு பார்த்தாள்.

“Aunty!” Charu said. “Please pick up these bags. I am sure you can reuse them.

“ஆன்ட்டி , தயவுசெய்து இந்த பைகளை எடுத்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள். அதை நீங்கள் மீண்டும் பயன்படுத்திக் கொள்ளலாமே,” என்றாள் சாரு.

Amutha aunty picked up the bags and left.

அமுதா ஆன்ட்டி பைகளை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு, சென்று விட்டாள்.

The next day when Charu woke up, the cloud was much smaller. Charu smiled. She knew what she had to do.

அடுத்தநாள், சாரு விழித்தெழுந்தபோது, அந்த மேகம் மேலும் சிறியதாகியிருந்தது. சாரு புன்னகைத்தாள். இப்போது அவள் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டுமென்பதை அறிந்து கொண்டாள்.

When someone threw away a biscuit packet or pencil shavings in the school, Charu stopped them.

யாராவது காலி பிஸ்கட் பாக்கெட்டையோ, பென்சில் சீவிய குப்பையையோ பள்ளியில் வீசி எறியும்போது, சாரு அவர்களை தடுத்தாள்.

She picked up every twisted plastic bottle near the hotel and put it in the dustbin.

ஹோட்டலுக்கு அருகில் முறுக்கப்பட்டு (நசுக்கப்பட்டு கிடந்த பிளாஸ்டிக் பாட்டில்களை எடுத்து, அவள் குப்பைத் தொட்டியில் போட்டாள்.

The village became cleaner and cleaner, and Charu’s cloud became smaller and smaller.

Until one day, it had gone.

Charu never littered again. Secretly, she liked having the village clean. But, she was also scared that the trash cloud would come back, some day.

சாரு மீண்டும் குப்பையை எப்போதும் வீசி எறிவதில்லை. அந்த கிராமம் தூய்மையாக இருக்க வேண்டுமென்று ரகசியமாக, அவள் விரும்பினாள். ஆனால், என்றாவது ஒரு நாள் அந்த குப்பை மேகம் திரும்ப வந்து விடுமோ என அவள் பயந்தாள்.
