Why is there a double negative in the title: The never – Never Nest? Elucidate with reasons from the play.
Answer:
Never – Never Nest is the title. It is absolutely justified because Jack and Jill, were living on a limited earning of just six pounds a month. The seed money given by Jane, as wedding gift was squandered by them in making advance payment for the house, fridge, piano etc. They continued to make EMI payments for all the items. The furniture, car and even the baby’s delivery fees was, running on EMI. There was nothing in the home they could call as completely their own.

Jack called himself the owner of the home but the EMI for the housing loan was going on and he had to continue it for many years. They are glad to be freed of the drudgery of paying rent. But they are entangled in paying EMI for the house, car, piano the bed, cot and the cozy furniture. It is very doubtful if ever the “nest” would be called a real nest. Would Jack and Jill ever become the real owners of the house and often gadgets at home is a pretty disturbing questions because Jack is borrowing every month to pay back his EMIs. Living beyond the means can never help a person to settle down in life. Such a person will have, insecurity every month.

Question 2.
Bring out the humorous elements in the play.
Answer:
“The Never – Never Nest” is a comic one-act play about a young couple. They make full use of the buy – now-pay. – later marketing system. This comedy is very relevant today, because we can. buy almost anything now on the instalment basis. The author uses humour elements.

When Jane asked about the car, Jill replied that they owned steering wheel of a car and one of the tyres and about two of the cylinders belong to them. It means the car does not belong to them. When Jane was asked to lie down by Jane She replied that she was going to trust herself in a bed that belongs to Mr Sage or Marks and Spencer or somebody.

Here the author brings out the humour element at the same time makes Jack realize his mistakes. At the end of the play, humour takes on wings when we hear that the couple had their first baby in instalment.

The author had to wait for an hour and read the magazines like “The Ladies Companion, Girls’ Magazine, and the Infants’ Journal. He had a disturbing feeling that he had done an unwarrantable thing in breaking in on the photographer’s privacy and his scientific pursuits with a face like his. After studying his face for some time from behind the camera, he said, the face was wrong. He commented that the face would be better three-quarters full. Then he held the author’s face making him believe that he was going to kiss it. He twisted the author’s face as far as it would go. He said that he didn’t like the head. Based on your understanding of the play, explain how a mistake understanding of events can lead to confusion. How has the author used this unexpected combination of events in the situation to create humour?
Answer:
Author C.V. Burgess is a master craftsman. He reveals only a few names. The first patient Joe and his wife Emily are the most dominant characters. Joe is inside the surgical room. Emily is apprehensive about the husband. Among two children the dramatist uses only the girl’s name Dorothea and the Dentist hospital becomes a play area for Dorothea and the little boy who claim the same magazine for reading. The snobbish woman who goes on showing her

photo album gives us an impression if she came to see the doctor or to show her photos. The whole play resolves around the dramatic irony of patients’ guess as to what happened inside the dentists’ room and what really happened. The pliers, hack saw and the huge hammer were taken inside the dentist’s room only for opening the tool cabinet. But the patients wondered how these tools would be used in surgery. The groaning noise from inside the dentist’s rooms and the vexation of Emily Joe add to the dramatic irony. A few women patients leave the waiting room scared of subjecting themselves to the torture of having their bad teeth extracted with carpentry tools. The nurse moves about with all feigned seriousness without disclosing the fact of the misplacement of key which adds to the comic situation

Once I visited the dental hospital with my mother for my cavity problem. I couldn’t bear toothache. My neighbour kept on talking about their family problem and asking me to give solution But, how could I give when I had a toothache. I thought myself that they were funny people.

After an hour, the Nurse called in Dentist examined my mouth and was shocked that I had a rare kind of teeth. The dentist asked me what sweets were liked by me I replied, just didn’t like only three kinds of sweets.

Dentists wondered and laughed too. Dentists asked his assistant and other patients to look at it. I thought that I would become a one-man freak show I decided to get a concession when I was paying the bill. Because I contributed my teeth for their further research.
