If z₁ = 1 – 3i, z₂ = -4i, and z₃ = 5, show that
(i) (z₁ + z₂) + z₃ = z₁ + (z₂ + z₃)
Solution:
z₁ = 1 – 3i, z₂ = -4i, z₃ = 5
(z₁ + z₂) + z₃
= (1 – 3i – 4i) + 5
= (1 – 7i) + 5
= 6 – 7i …… (1)
z₁ + (z₂ + z₃)
= (1 – 3i) + (-4i + 5)
= 6 – 7i ……. (2)
from (1) & (2) we get
∴ (z₁ + z₂) + z₃ = z₁ + (z₂ + z₃)

(ii) (z₁ z₂)z₃ = z₁(z₂ z₃)
Solution:
(z₁ z₂) z₃ = [(1 – 3i) (-4i]5
= [-4i + 12 i²]5
= [-12 – 4i] 5
= -60 – 20i ……. (1)
z₁ (z₂ z₃) = (1 – 3i)[(-4i)(5)]
= (-20i + 60 i²)
= -20i – 60 ……. (2)
from (1) & (2) we get
∴ (z₁ z₂)(z₃) = z₁ (z₂ z₃)

Question 2.
If z₁ = 3, z₂ = 7i, and z₃ = 5 + 4i, show that
(i) z₁(z₂ + z₃) = z₁ z₂ + z₁ z₃
Solution:
z₁ = 3, z₂ = 7i, z₃ = 5 + 4i
z₂ + z₃ = -7i + 5 + 4i
= 5 – 3i
z₁ (z₂ + z₃) = 3 (5 – 3i) + 15 – 9i …………. (1)
z₁ z₂ = 3(-7i) = -21i
z₁ z₃ = 3(5 + 4i) = 15 + 12i
z₁ z₂ + z₁ z₃ = -21i + 15 + 12i
= 15 – 9i ……… (2)
∴ from 1 and 2
z₁(z₂ + z₃) = z₁ z₂ + z₁ z₃

Solution:
z₁ + z₂ = 3 – 7i
(z₁ + z₂)z₃ = (3 – 7i) (5 + 4i)
= 15 + 12i – 35i + 28i²
= 15 + 12i – 35i + 28i
= 43 – 23i ………… (1)
z₁ z₃ = 3(5 + 4i) = 15 + 12i
z₂ z₃ = – 7i(5 + 4i) = -35i – 28i²
= – 35i + 28
z₁ z₃ + z₂ z₃ = (15 + 12i) + (-35i + 28)
= 15 + 12i – 35i + 28
= 43 – 23i …………. (2)

If z₁ = 2 + 5i, z₂ = – 3 – 4i, and z₃ = 1 + i, find the additive and multiplicative inverse of z₁, z₂ and z₃.
Solution:
(i) z₁ = 2 + 5i
additive inverse z₁ is -z₁
⇒ -(2 + 5i) = -2 – 5i
Multiplicative inverse z₁ is (z₁)^-1
We know
z₁ z₁^-1 = 1
⇒ (2 + 5i) (u + iv) = 1 [∵ z^-1 = u + iv]
2u + 2iv + 5iu – 5v = 1
(2u – 5v) + i (5u + 2v) = 1 + i 0
Equating real and imaginary parts
2u – 5v = 1
5u + 2v = 0
Solving them, we get

(ii) z₂ = – 3 – 4i
Additive inverse z₂ is -z₂
⇒ -(3 – 4i) = 3 + 4i
Multiplicative inverse z₂ is (z₂)^-1
We know
z₂ z₂^-1 = 1
⇒ (-3 – 4i) (u + iv) = 1 [∵ z₂^-1 = u + iv]
-3u – 3iv – 4iu + 4v = 1
(-3u + 4v) + i (-4u – 3v) = 1 + i 0
we get -3u + 4v = 1
-4u – 3v = 0

Describe the ‘Grand Prix’ at Cape Town’s Red Cross Children’s Hospital.
Answer:
The author describes the event as “the Grand Prix of Cape Town’s Red Cross Childrens’ Hospital”. A nurse had left a breakfast trolley unattended. Very soon this trolley was commandeered by a daring crew of two, a driver and a mechanic. The mechanic provided motor power by galloping along behind the trolley head down. While the driver, seated on the lower deck held on with one hand and steered it by scrapping his foot on the floor. The choice of roles was easy because the mechanic was totally blind and the driver had only one arm. It was better than Indianapolis 500 car race. Patients shouted and cheered the boys. There was a grand finale of scattered plates and silverware before the nurse and ward sister took control of the situation.

How did Hillary and Tenzing prepare themselves before they set off to the summit?

They started up their cookers and drank lots of lemon juice and sugar. Then they took sardines and biscuits. Hillary cleaned the ice off the oxygen sets. He rechecked and tested them. He had removed his boots which had become wet the day before. They were now frozen solid. It would be very challenging to start climbing ice-cold Himalayas with such wet and chilling boots. So, he cooked them over the fierce flame of Primus and managed to soften them up.

They were also conscious of the probabilityof braving snow storms during the ascent. They fortified their clothing with wind proof and also pulled three pairs of gloves silk, woollen, and windproof on to their hands. At 6.30 am they crawled out of their tent into the snow. The emotional bonding between herself and the giant Casuarina tree is beyond reason. In the third part of the poem, Ulysses makes a clarion call to his hearty compatriots (i.e.) mariners. They have been with him both during ‘thick and thin’ or thunders or sunshine. They had frolicsome time fighting along with Ulysses against great warriors and Gods in the past. Ulysses does not want to live in memory of glory. He believes they need not waste away their precious time in nostalgic memories just recounting their escapades to younger generation. He is conscious of the impending death in old age. The many “voices of the ocean” call out to the mariners to resume voyage. He does not want his compatriots to miss even an hour which could provide them novel experiences in their voyage. Their life would be one of fulfillment only when they venture out into the unknown on the seas. He uses an emotional bait to his mariners.

He highlights the probable outcome of their voyage. They might reach the “Happy Isles” (i.e.) great paradise and meet Achilles, their war hero. No matter how much strength they have, they still have some “strength of will” left to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

The children lay out laughing on the jungle mattresses and heard it sigh and squeak under them resilient and alive. They ran among the trees, they slipped and fell and pushed one another.

They played hide and seek. But most of them squinted at the sun until tears ran down their faces. They put their hands up to the yellowness and the amazing blueness, they breathed off the fresh air and listened to the silence in a blessed sea of soundlessness. They looked at everything and savoured everything. Like animals escaped from their caves, they ran shouting in circles. Their mirth continued for one hour.

of paper in his coat pocket and has forgotten about it. On seeing that note, Lord Weston is shocked. Roger, the assistant of the judge elevates him to the level of a tragic hero.

Mrs. Weston’s entry lightens up the whole drama and the tragedy transitions into a dark comedy. Lady Weston keeps hinting about earlier attempts when he was eating a game pie. When Weston says he has instructed Roger to barricade all doors, her immediate worry is about the grocery awaited. She asks if he was expecting both French and Dutch together in the attempt to assassinate. Lady Weston doesn’t want to send away the cook. She is practical.

She wants her to stay back to cook his pet dishes. Lady Weston brings a handful of candles to keep the room lit if Mr. Weston has to stay underground for a while. A velvet coat is construed as an infernal machine that could blow up the whole place is smothered with books inside a pail of water. The arrival of Mr. Caesar only sorts out the knot. The right to move stops when the other person’s right to drive starts. A person may have a walking stick and roll it too. But his right just stops where the other person’s nose begins. No one has the right to violate the rights of others. The right, one exercises, must not affect or erode the rights of others.

One should not think of one’s own rights but also the rights of others. A.G.Gardiner beautifully illustrates this idea by emphasising the metaphor of traffic rules. Rules of road are in fact rules of politeness and unselfishness. One may have absolute freedom in the choice of food, religion, fashionable dress, up keep of hair, funny hairstyle, etc. But one must be conscious of the rights of others. Baldwin was paid only 60 dollars a week for working as a Governor of the private bank founded by Gresham.

Accidentally, Baldwin found out how Gresham was siphoning money very cleverly from the deposits technically without really causing any loss to the depositors. Third National Bank was ready to help the reorganization of the bank. Meanwhile, Gresham was arrested. The court could not nail Gresham as there was not a shred of evidence to prove his guilt. If Baldwin testified, the court would indict him. Just before being arrested Gresham offered him one hundred thousand dollars to just say “I don’t remember”. The three words to let him off the hook. He claimed it was the difference between the salary he had been paid and what he ought to have received. Had it been someone else, Baldwin would have slapped him.

But it was Gresham who understood his body language and did not press the matter further. He was proud of the fact that Gresham understood how he could not compromise with his conscience. His family members Martha, Evie and John felt that it was a compliment that cost him one hundred thousand dollars. Baldwin said that Gresham’s compliment about his uprightness was worth a hundred thousand dollars.

Occasional self-medication has always been part of normal living. The making and selling of drugs has a long history and is closely linked, like medical practice itself, with belief in magic. The doctor is now able to follow up the correct diagnosis of many illnesses – with specific treatment of their causes. In many other illnesses of which the causes remain unknown, he is still limited, like the unqualified prescriber, to the treatment of symptoms.

The doctor is trained to decide when to treat symptoms only and when to attack the cause. This is the essential difference between medical prescribing and self-medication. The advance of technology has brought about much progress in some fields of medicine, including the development of scientific drug therapy. Parallel with such beneficial trends are two which have an adverse effect. One is the use of high pressure advertising by the pharmaceutical industry which has tended to influence both patients and doctors and has led to the overuse of drugs generally.

The other is emergence of eating, insufficient sleep, excessive smoking and drinking. People with disorders arising from faulty habits such as these, as well as from unhappy human relationships, often resort to self-medication. Advertisers go to great lengths to catch this market. Clever advertising, aimed at chronic sufferers who will try anything because doctors have not been able to cure them, can induce such faith in a preparation, particularly if steeply priced, that it will produce -by suggestion- a very real effect in some people.

It is doubtful whether taking these things ever improves a person’s health, it may even make it worse. Worse, because the preparation may contain unsuitable ingredients; worse because the taker may become dependent on them; worse because they might be taken excess; worse because they may cause poisoning, and worst of all because symptoms of some serious underlying cause may be asked and therefore medical help may not be sought. It has been said, “Never put off for tomorrow what you can do today”. Yet there are many people who enjoy postponing things. Such people do not realize the dangers of delaying. Work does not disappear if we postpone it. The difficulty of the work does not get reduced by postponing it. The more we postpone, the more the work piles up. Finally, the load of work seems too much. We then have to work for many days at a stretch under great strain and tension. Finally we do it hurriedly and in a careless manner.

It is as bad as not doing the work at all. Again, when some work is delayed, the time which would have been profitably used is wasted. Time wasted is time lost forever. Hence procrastination, that is the habit of postponing things, is rightly called the thief of time. Precious time wasted means opportunities lost, and lost forever. By the time we realize how much time we have wasted and how many opportunities we have missed by delaying word, it may be too late.

And then nothing remains for us except to regret and repent. Sometimes a very heavy price has to be paid for delaying things.
